Helford Head of River Race – results

A flat and fast race up to Gweek from the Helford River mouth with a nice following breeze. Always a hard race and very well attended this year by a variety of crews and boats from near and far, a pity one or two clubs couldn’t make it at the last minute and a great atmosphere for the whole day with well organised logistics at the finish.

The race is a pursuit race with crews being awarded a start time depending on the make up of the crew so there are no distict crew classes to worry about. First over the line takes one prize and there’s also a prize for fastest overall course time. The gigs track time was so close, just 1 second between the Dutch Crew in Helford and Flushing & Mylor’s Penarrow.

Skiffs - 1st Rapido (Helford), 2nd Patience (Helford), 3rd No41 (Rock)
Flashboats - 1st Thilly, 2nd No49 (Rock), 3rd No84 (Caradon)
Anarths - 1st Anton
Oyster Punt - 1st Cadgwith
Rubber Duck tenders – 1st Toby, 2nd Hutch (‘tho no-one saw them finish!)

Gigs – over the line results -

1st Golden Gear (Helford Ladies Vets), 2nd Kerens (Torridge), 3rd Merthen (Helford)

Helford Head of the river gig race

“Don’t forget there’s a BBQ and Cadgwith singers joining us for a sing song in the evening from 6pm if anyone isn’t able to race but would like to come along for a social!”

Also, a request that any trophy holders from 2008 could do with bringing the silverware from last year.

World Offshore Rowing Championships :: Invite

World Offshore Rowing Championships :: Invite

Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club are staging the World Offshore Rowing Championships in October 23 – 25th. They have over 22 nations competing.  The boats are quads, doubles and singles which have to conform to exact FISA (World Governing Body) specifications so the majority of British Club boats will not qualify.

offshorerow

But, on Sunday 25th they intend to stage a series of ’open boat’ class races to showcase British Rowing. This would be open to the Gigs.

However, there are logistical problems in managing the number of boats and trailers entering the Queen Annes Battery Marina site in Plymouth.  They anticipate over 100 FISA spec boats taking part in the World programme so space is crucial bearing in mind we only have two slipways.  This is the basis of the discussion I would like to open up to CPGA if you would be interested.

If your club would like to enter can you contact the e-mail address as below, they will have to levy an entry fee of £10 per crew member

Our website www.mayfloweroffshorerowingclub.co.uk will give you some idea of the event.  follow link to World Offshore Rowing Champs.

French Sea Rowing Championships :: Invite

My name is Neil McKenzie and I’m a Sea rower with Société Bautique de La Ciotat.

French Sea Rowing

This year we are hosting the 13th French Club Sea Rowing Championships which will take place from the 9th to 11th of October here in La Ciotat.

While the 9th and 10th of October are for the French Championships, on the 11th we will be hosting an international club sea rowing event.

We already have inscriptions from various European teams and we would love to have some British rowers here. The course will be 12km long and will take in the sights of the bay of La Ciotat including a tour of the Isle of Vert. Weather conditions are generally favourable and the water is reasonably warm in October.

We are well served by both Toulon & Marseilles airports.

Our club website can be found at http://snc-aviron.dyndns.org and our championships website will be ready shortly.

The race will be in the following categories:

  • Senior Male
  • Senior Female

Hope to here from you soon and see you in October.

HEAD OF THE RIVER RACE – Saturday 17th October 2009

Helford Gog Club Pilot Gig Race

The race is a handicapped event dependent upon the individual rower ability. The pursuit race commences from the mouth of the river, launching boats at Helford Passage beach, in front of the Ferryboat Inn and finishes at Gweek. This year we would also like to invite skiffs and flashboats to take part.

Boats need to arrive at the top of the hill at Helford Passage by 1.30pm where they will be towed down by a HRGC member. The coxes meeting will be held on the beach at 3.30p.m and gigs will leave the beach immediately after for the start of the race at 4.30p.m.

Helford Head of the river gig race

For those who have not taken part in this event before, the trailers (once gigs have been launched) will need to be taken to either Gweek boatyard or our clubhouse in Gweek, to recover the gigs at the end of the race, so please allow at least ¾ of an hour to return to Helford Passage for the start of the race.

Following the race, trailers and cars can be taken from Gweek boatyard to our clubhouse where there will be a prize giving, raffle, barrelled beer, wine, BBQ, chilli supper and lots of other refreshments. There is camping available on site for those who would like to make an evening of it and stay late!

Race Map

For those able to join in the race, it would obviously be helpful to know as early as possible in order to cater adequately. There is a limit to how many gigs we can accommodate so we will work on a first come first serve basis. It would also be useful if you could let us know if you are unable to make it.

Please could you fill in the attached handicap form so we can work out your start time prior to the day, specifying how many mens A, other men, ladies A and other ladies/juniors, and return it to me at the above address no later than  1st October 2009.

We look forward to receiving your entry form!

Tide
Low water is at 1300 at 0.1m, this is a very low spring, almost chart datum and rowers in the later heats will experience a very strong flood tide against them on the way out and enjoy a very quick run in home.  I am not that familiar with Fowey but would not be surprised to see 2-3 knots of current mid tide and mid channel with such a big spring.

Eddystone Challenge :: Report by James

Eddystone Challenge :: Report by James

Thank you to James from Bristol for this fantastic report from the Eddystone Challenge we took place this weekend.

Conditions for the Eddystone Challenge were not looking too favourable at 8am, with poor visibility and a reasonably fresh southwesterly breeze making the likelihood of the full race taking place doubtful. In 2008 gale force winds and driving rain had meant that the course was changed to the reserve event, the Tamar Challenge and many crews had returned this year with the hope that the full race would go ahead. There were Celtic longboats, ocean going quads, kayaks and three gigs. Bristol Gig Club had a men’s crew in Young Bristol, and Tamar and Tavy had a men’s crew and a mixed crew going out in Tamar and Ginette respectively.

2009 Eddystoe Challenge

As the safety briefing approached an eager crowd gathered, and not wanting to keep us waiting the safety organiser confirmed that we would be rowing the full Eddystone Challenge; 28 miles around the Eddystone Lighthouse before returning to finish off Mountbatten pier. There was a bit of good natured banter between the two gig clubs as the gigs were launched as Bristol were defending the trophy for first gig home in 2008, but the Tamar crew decided to remind the crew of Young Bristol that they hadn’t fared so well against them in the recent Tribute race at Rame.

Eddystone Challenge

The race started promptly with good rowing conditions out to the breakwater, however the conditions all the way out to the lighthouse were less than ideal, with frequent steep chop causing the bow rower to leaving his seat with alarming regularity. There was a 3pm cut off for crews to reach the Eddystone Lighthouse, and due to the difficult chop only a handful of competitors made it round. In order to make it in time the Bristol cox tried some dubious motivational talk: “Come on boys, with every stroke that stick gets bigger!” It seemed to work as Young Bristol was the only gig to make it around before 3pm, making it with twenty minutes to spare. Sadly for the crew of the Tamar they were turned round with less than a mile to go to the lighthouse, and the mixed crew of Ginette turned back a couple of miles from the Eddystone.

Eddystone Challenge Rowing

The return leg meant a race with the swell, and the frustration from the outgoing row was soon forgotten as the lighthouse disappeared from view at a steady rate. The sun even came out for the last hour, and anyone near to the Young Bristol might have heard the strains of ‘South Australia’ being sung, or perhaps that more unusual sea shanty ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. With only a handful of boats in front, Bristol crossed the line in 5 hrs 17 minutes and 12seconds, retaining the trophy for first gig home for the second year running.

As each crew returned to the slipway most seemed to be carrying the aches and pains that were to be expected, but the achievement of completing the race gave a smile to everyone. The crews from Tamar and Tavy were disappointed not make the lighthouse, but offered plenty of congratulations to the Bristol Club, and the only shame was the small number of gig clubs willing to take on the challenge. Talk of next year was already underway by the time the presentation was taking place, admittedly most of that was ‘never again’, but with a trophy to defend and with Tamar and Tavy saying that Bristol can’t win it three times running, there will surely be a few gigs back in 2010 to take on the Eddystone Challenge.
