New Gig :: Alfie Jenkins - Tresco & Bryher Gig Club

New Gig :: Alfie Jenkins – Tresco & Bryher Gig Club

The new Tresco & Bryher gig was launched today, Sunday 25th April 2010. The forecasted weather thankfully being replaced with bright sunshine and blue skies as a gathering of islanders and visitors flocked to New Grimsby beach to watch Father Guy bless the newest member of the club, Alfie Jenkins.

Built by Peter Martin of St. Marys, the new arrival has been given the best start in life, as Scillonian as possible, a true local.

The club has worked hard over the past three years to raise the money, thousands upon thousands of raffle tickets have been sold, sponsored rows, pasties and sandwiches made and buckets rattled at unsuspecting visitors. We would like to say a massive and heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported our efforts and who have made this special and exciting day possible, we really are so very grateful for all of your kindness and generosity!

No time to settle in though Alfie… you’ve got a busy weekend coming up!

Steve Gentry, Calstock Rowing Club Chairman says, it’s fantastic that a traditional Cornish family business has recognised that Gig rowing is a growing sport in the region, and he hopes it will encourage more businesses in the county to support the sport.

The 'Harry Paye' Charity Row

The ‘Harry Paye’ Charity Row

THE ‘HARRY PAYE’ CHARITY ROW 2010.  On the 15th of May 2010 the Pirates of Poole intend to row a 32 foot GRP copy of a Cornish Pilot Gig from Lands end to Poole quay dressed as pirates. We will travel approximately 250 miles stopping at several seaside towns and harbours (please see attached schedule) on this journey. The crew began training in December as none of this motley crew have experience of rowing this type of vessel and we intend to raise monies for several different charities.

Macmillan; as I recently lost my father to cancer.

The Wessex heartbeat; as one of the crews 2 year old daughter would not be here now without the help of these people.

The R.N.L.I.; three of our crew are lifeboat crew.

The Royal Marines charity trust Fund; one of the crew and one of the event organisers are ex marines.

Headway; one of the crew was helped by these people after a serious head injury.

Our boat is currently being built in St.Austell and we hope to take delivery of it early in the New Year. This vessel is only being built through the generous sponsorship of LAIRD SECURITY HARDWARE LTD. And the help and support of Swanage rowing club.

The boat will be named ‘ARRYPAYE’ after the infamous pirate of Poole (see attached history) and will also show sponsors logos or web site addresses. Our land support crew will be arriving at destinations ahead of us in order to set up a stall for charity collection and public awareness of the event. All company sponsors will also be advertised on our support van and any correspondence letters. We will also be advertising Harry Paye day which will take place on june19th on Poole quay and the boat will take part in the parade of pirates and be on display to the public, we will also be displaying the boat in the build up to the row on poole quay during April and May to maximise exposure for sponsors and help with our charity collections.

We also intend to take letters of apology from the Pirates of Poole to several towns on route as the Spanish and French fleet pillaged several of these on route to Poole in 1406 whilst hunting for Harry Paye and ending up in Poole and burning the town to the ground.

Should you feel that you or your company could help through sponsorship of any kind be it a cash donation towards our selected charities or help with equipment needed to undertake this challenge please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

We are currently at the early stages of organisation but the positive response we have had so far has been really encouraging and I feel this will grow to become a very high profile event. More information about the Pirates of Poole and what we do is available at www.piratesofpoole.com

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and any support you can offer will be gratefully received.

Lyme Regis Gig Club :: New Gig

Lyme Regis Gig Club :: New Gig

On a day that managed to produce some sunshine, Lyme Regis Gig Club launched their second gig Black Ven.  An emotional speech by her builder, Gail McGarva, left more than one club member with a tear in the eye, after which Black Ven was named by Lyme Regis’ Mayor, Michaela Ellis and blessed by the Reverend Keith Vivian, an ex-rower himself.

Black Ven entered the water through an arch of oars, accompanied by a sea shanty written especially for her.  Sea salt was thrown over her for luck by club members and the public, a tradition introduced to Lyme by Gail, who built both Black Ven and Rebel for the club.

After a ceremonial row around the South Cardinal buoy in Lyme Bay, accompanied by sister Rebel, Old Harry from Swanage, and the Lyme Regis lifeboat, Lyme then held a Ladies and Mens race in heavy seas and a head wind.  Both were won by Swanage in Old Harry, with Rebel not far behind, and Black Ven, as the baby, came in last.

Celebrations continued into the evening with much cake, Otter beer and a hog roast.  Club Chairman Marcus Dixon said ‘Gail’s speech really encapsulated what it was all about.  It’s terrific for us to have a second gig in addition to Rebel, and a fibreglass one on the way… We are in contention now – we just need to get better!’

And with a welter of gigs to help achieve that, that is exactly what Lyme intend to do!

Many thanks to all the rowers from Swanage and Weymouth who came down and helped to make it such a special day.

There were some old faces there as well, for those that remember Mark Holland (Porthleven and Falmouth) he is an active rowing member of the club and was in the A crew for the first race with the new gig.

It was noticeable chatting to many of the members later that they really have embraced the Cornish Pilot Gig Spirit and that the boats are central to the whole Club and they are lovingly cherished by all who are involved in the club.

Pilot Gig ''Teazer'' enjoys some TLC

Pilot Gig ”Teazer” enjoys some TLC

The pilot gig Teazer, which is Padstow Gig Club’s oldest boat, is undergoing refit at Brain Nobbs yard in Launceston.

Brian has removed the old traditional V grooved keel from the Teazer and replaced it with a hog piece and new keel. The stem, forward deadwood and apron have also been renewed. The stern post was fine but the stern knee was replaced and with the new keel came two new garboard strakes and new lengths of planking above the garboard on the four quarters. Eight new ribs and floors forward and aft have given the old girl a new stem and stern.

An incredible 20kg of paint has been burnt off the inside of the hull to prepare for her repainting.

Brian Nobbs who has built Ginette, Iron Maid & Tamar and also undertakes refit and repair work and can be contacted here.
