As the gig rowing fleet gears up for the eagerly anticipated 2012 World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly, it’s fun to see that over a hundred years ago that decisions on the best boat to use, selecting which rower is best for which seat and discussions on diet, training, coaching and technique were as hotly debated as now. The excellent online copy of “On Rowing” is available at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/34950/34950-h/34950-h.htm.
Hi, I am writing on behalf of Swanage Sea Rowing Club. We have a sailing rig for one of our gigs and would be keen to start making regular use of it. Unfortunately, although we have a number of sailors in the club we have nobody with experience of sailing a gig or even using other lug rigs. We would appreciate some instruction on setting up and using the sailing rig from one of the clubs that do sail regularly, [...]

So, we have a squad of good rowers, and we now want to build a crew. How do we match the athlete to the Seat/Position, and indeed match athletes to each other to produce the most efficient and cohesive crew? The different potential arc angles at the catch in the 6 different positions in the boat which we looked at earlier in Article – 4, [...]

Oar and Blade Dimensions for each seat : Why do the 6 Oars for a Cornish Pilot Gig vary in length by around 15cms (6”) and sometimes by as much as 20cms (8”)? Rowing boats without outriggers will obviously have a variation in the width of the boat at each seat position, with the widest being around the middle, and the narrowest being towards the tapering ends of the boat. This means that if each rower is to have the [...]

You often hear your cox or coach say that “every stroke counts” and to race “inch-by-inch”, to flow, and to let the boat run. Put all that you can into making the boat accelerate then do as little to upset it on the recovery! The margins, the tiny differences, they all add up. Our sport is amazingly competitive and the racing so close. A great illustration is to look at some result stats from the recent 2011 3 Rivers race, [...]
