Skath :: Available on DVD

The DVD of ‘Skath – The Cornish Pilot Gig’ is now available. This 45-minute film shows Cornish language poet Pol Hodge as he goes from novice gig rower to row in the 2009 World Championships. It’s funny and poetic and will feel very familiar! In Cornish and English, with English subtitles. Winner of the Cornwall Film Festival Govyn Kernewek award.

Extra: the Sailing Gig Race 2009, won by Nornour. (25 mins.)

Old footage found :: Gig Racing

Old gig footage found.

This stunning footage has been found on YouTube. It mainly shows old lifeboat footage and other leisure activities, but there is some old footage of Gigs racing across the bay in Newquay.

The film is estimated to be post 1923, and it has recently been converted into digital format.

Gig Racing starts about 4 minutes in.

Scilly 09 :: Official Video on Sale!

For the 20th anniversary of the championships, the World Pilot Gig Championships committee commissioned for a dvd to be made covering the weekend.

The footage includes interviews with, organisers, sponsors and crews plus additional live footage of the races. This production captures the sporting passion of the championships and gives an insight into what goes into organising this spectacular event.

BBC Countryfile this Sunday 4th Oct.

[CPGA] Some of you maybe aware that during the mens championships at Newquay there was a crew filiming for Countryfile with presenter Matt Baker. The programme containing the six minutes will be shown on Sunday 4th October 2009 – this Sunday.

Interviews were shot with a number of rowers as well as Jason Nicholas (Chair of the CPGA), John Bawden (Trustee of the Newquay Old Gigs) as well as some of the crew that rowed with Matt Baker.
