Hayle Gig Club :: Rowing to Scilly

Hayle Gig Club :: Rowing to Scilly

Quick message to say look out for Hayle Gig Club, as we are (weather permitting!) embarking on a row from Sennen to Scillies on the 9th July! We have a squad of 10, along with a support boat travelling alongside us. It’s the first time we’ve attempted anything like this as a club, so we’ll see how it goes. If anyone is sailing / flying over on that Friday, give us a wave!

Wish us luck!

James Watt & Olly Whitman :: Take on the Atlantic!

James Watt & Olly Whitman :: Take on the Atlantic!

It’s A Long Way To Row

James Watt and Olly Whitman will be taking part in the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race, starting in December 2011. Starting at La Gomera in the Canaries, and finishing around 2,500 nautical miles later in Antigua, they will have pushed themselves beyond what they ever thought possible. They both row for Bristol Gig Club, as the stroke pair for the Bristol mens A crew in Scilly this year, but the idea of taking on the world’s toughest rowing race has been brewing between them for some time.

“Being from the Isles of Scilly I was first inspired by the Scilly Boys who attempted a different crossing, the North Atlantic, in 2008 and after moving to Bristol and chatting with Olly I realised I had found someone who was willing to take on the challenge with me,” say James. “It’s also great to see the guys from Lyme Regis taking part in a fours boat, and I’m sure there’ll there’ll be plenty of banter between us once we get to the start line!”

Along the way they hope to raise money for Sparks, a children’s medical research charity, and Sustrans, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity. Olly says “It’s great to be raising money for some good causes to make sure that all the effort that is put into the crossing benefits more than just the rowers taking part – but the enduring motivation (and memories after the event) will undoubtedly be of the personal challenges involved in crossing an ocean.”

Breast Cancer :: Row to Lundy

Breast Cancer :: Row to Lundy

Calling all rowers who have had breast cancer and who are back rowing.  Would you like to take part in a rather special event?  I want to field a crew of breast cancer survivors to take part in Clovelly Gig Club’s annual race out to Lundy Island and back on the 10th and 11th of July 2010.  So what is involved?  Well, quite a long row, for starters!  Weather dependent, the crossing from Clovelly to the island should take about three hours, then you put up tents and relax, have a look around the island, retire to the pub, before rowing back to Clovelly the next day.  I took part two years ago and it was genuinely an amazing experience.  Please come and join me this year!  There are two main aims to the venture: one, as a fund raiser for Breast Cancer Care and two, as a profile raiser, to show that it is possible to lead an active life after breast cancer and, hopefully, for it to be an inspiration and encouragement to those recently diagnosed.  If you are interested, and for more information, contact Chrissie Muir via www.rockrowingclub.com or at chrissiemuir@gmail.com

Pirates of Pool :: Pirate Invasion

Pirates of Pool :: Pirate Invasion

Pirate invasion!!! Sunday 16th May!!!

The  (Dorset) are planning to row a Cornish pilot gig from Lands End to Poole Quay on a jolly/raid. A distance of some 250 miles, they’ll be stopping for ‘refreshment’ and some charity bucket rattling at points along the route, with their planned port of call for Sunday the 16th being the Chainlocker at Falmouth.

Rowing up from Cadgwith on that leg, they’re hoping to arrive “sometime from lunchtime onwards”. Their support van will be at the pub from 1pm and will keep people up to speed on the crew’s e.t.a.

Never having rowed before, the Pirates are enjoying (sic) a steep gig rowing learning curve which has left them with no skin whatsoever left on their backsides. “And we’ve already had our first tantrum in the boat” laughed organiser, John from the Jolly Sailor in Poole. “It all got resolved swiftly in the bar afterwards, though”.

The Pirates are hoping to see as many gig clubs as possible turn out along the route… on the water if possible and in the pub for certain. It should be some helluvah do (and an ideal mid-May social), with the Chainlocker planning to organise entertainment in the form of a bit of a sing (the Falmouth Shout are to attend, I’ve heard).

Full details of the plundering plans can be found on the Pirates of Poole’s website.

Looe :: Junior Rowing Leaders Award

Looe :: Junior Rowing Leaders Award

A group of juniors at Looe rowing club have been fortunate enough to receive funding from Cornwall Sports Partnership to complete the junior rowing leaders award (JRLA). Ten students completed the part one award, requiring them to demonstrate knowledge of the indoor rowing structure in schools, competitions, technique and equipment. They also had to plan and deliver a session within the school rowing club. Eight of these students then went on to complete part two of the award which involves the running of an event.

A total of five teams from the senior section of Looe rowing club entered the JRLAs indoor competition held at Looe school on 21st April. Three machines were linked to a big screen and each team member had to complete either a 2 min, 3 min or 4 min row and a team relay. The JRLAs took charge of all aspects of the event, which was fun and competitive. The young rowers had the chance to get their own back on junior coaches as James, Rhiannon, Fraser, Mike and Kerry all competed in the event.  The winning team, the Slow snakes was made up of James Chudleigh, Joe Rothwell and Simon. Club chairman James said ‘I’ve never won a indoor rowing competition before’ and was very pleased with his pink water bottle and skipping rope prize.

The JRLAs will now log in to the step into sport passport, onto which they can log any hours spent volunteering with the club.

The JRLA team:

MC – Fred Alsop. Admin and scoring – Amelia Bridges and Lucy Rawe,

I.T set up – Damaris Butters, Prizes – Alex Hicks, Warm up – Zach

Thomas, Advertising – Spencer Delf. Ergo coaches – Zach, Spencer, Alex and Will Courtis.

A Unique Opportunity

In June 2010 a team of six men will attempt to write a new page in the rowing history books. The Racewww.gbrowchallenge.com

The Anglo American Boat Race 2010 is a 2010 mile circumnavigation of Great Britain in ocean rowing boats departing from Tower Bridge in London on the 1st of June. It is non-stop and unaided so crews will need to be completely self sufficient for the 3-4 weeks they will be at sea. The current record is 26 days and was set by a British Army team in 2005. An experienced six man crew stand an excellent chance of beating that record. Only one other crew has ever attempted the row. The current record holders at the end of their row in 2005. The race originated in 1872 when a New York club posted a challenge to the London Rowing Club to row a four-oared race on the Thames. It remained one of the most important races of the season until the Second World War, when it was discontinued. 2010 sees it return in its revised format.

Charity

The crew will be fundraising for a charity with international impact. The charity will be chosen to fit the corporate social responsibility remit of the crew’s title sponsor and will be announced prior to the race start.

The Boat – Sara G

Sara G is one of only three 6-man ocean rowing boats in existence. She was built in 2007 and has completed successful Tasman Sea and Atlantic Ocean crossings.

About Ocean Rowing

Ocean rowing is considered one of the top three extreme pursuits alongside polar exploration and attempts to summit Everest. Trans-Atlantic ocean rowing races have been running regularly since the early 1990s, but this is the first time an ocean rowing race has been held so close to land. The unique format, combined with advances in communication technology, make it the most accessible ocean rowing event of all time.

Connecting with the Audience

Online
The crew will micro-blog during the row, Tweeting as often as every half hour and posting photos and video clips to their website, at regular intervals during the day. The audience can choose to receive these updates in their RSS feed, in an email or via SMS. The website, hosted on Wordpress, will be highly interactive, with new content being added daily to encourage repeat traffic. Video will be hosted on YouTube, photos will be hosted on Picasa and all content will be aggregated to Facebook in order to drive maximum traffic to the website.

Documentary
A documentary intended for UK and South African terrestrial broadcast is being produced by an independent film maker. It will follow the crew’s journey from their first training session through to the finish of the race.

Press
The crew will be followed by local radio and newspapers all over the UK and South Africa and by the international rowing and boating press. With a well-known skipper at the helm and a World Record up for grabs they also anticipate excellent national press coverage.

Children
The crew will work very closely with Ludgvan Community Primary School in Penzance where one crew member teaches. They will also connect to hundreds of other children around the world securely via the internet, helping to inspire the next generation of adventurers.

Dear Community Group,

We are looking for interested community groups (preferably small groups with no, or few, paid staff) who would like sign up in principle to a potential new pilot  project to have a new person(s) join their committee in the roles of Chairperson, Secretary or Treasurer.

These people would be trained appropriately for their role before joining your committee and the project would look to target new volunteers from 18+ students and newly retired people.

If you would like to have a new person in your committee to help share the workload then there are some requirements that it would be necessary for your group to sign up to:

Agree to being taken through a Level2 ILCM Health Check within 6 months of the project commencing (ILCM is a formal 2 hour audit (plus preparation time) of your group’s procedures whereby you would come out with a useful action plan to help you improve the working of your group and committee) (www.ilcm.org.uk )
Attend at least one Skills Exchange events with other Chairs, Secretary and Treasurers (a half day event).
Adopt proper volunteer policies (which cover those volunteering on the committee as well as those volunteering on the ground).
If your committee is interested in having new board members and is prepared to sign up to doing the small scale improvement work outlined above, then please register your interest by filling in our expression of interest form which is accessed by clicking on the link below:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WQDVRBB

Once you have signed up, we will be in touch and keep you informed with our developments.  We cannot guarantee at this stage that there will be enough demand for this pilot will go ahead, or that if it does go ahead that it will include your particular geographical area.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 26th March 2010.

Lyme Regis Gig Club :: Accepting the ultimate rowing challenge

Lyme Regis Gig Club :: Accepting the ultimate rowing challenge

In June 1966, Chay Blyth and John Ridgeway rowed out from Cape Cod and after 92 days and 50ft waves arrived in Ireland, the first, in modern times to row the Atlantic.  Inspired by this historic crossing the oceans the rowing race concept was born.  Since its inauguration in 1997 the WoodVale Challenges Atlantic Rowing Race has enabled over 200 courageous rowers to achieve one of the ultimates in human endeavour.

Now, four rowers from Lyme Regis Gig Club, Chris Walters, Brian Fletcher, Tony Short and Elliott Dale, are preparing to accept this ultimate rowing challenge and compete in the 2011 race.  ‘The Corinthians’ as they have dubbed themselves, will set out in December 2011 to row the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canary Islands, to Antigua in the Caribbean in their boat ‘Spirit of Corinth’.  Rowing 24 hours a day, two hours on, two hours off, the race is 2500 nautical miles long, and will take between 40 to 55 days to complete.

The Corinthians say  “As a team we not only desire to achieve our own ambitions, but also wish to support those less fortunate than themselves in the process.  With this in mind we have chosen two charities with which to share on a 50/50 basis funds raised in support of our challenge.”  The chosen charities are ShelterBox and the British Heart Foundation.

The team are currently looking for sponsorship for the row and will also be donating half of the funds raised to their chosen charities, Shelterbox and The Heart Foundation. If you would like to support the Corinthians in any way, then please contact Andrew Pocock on spiritofcorinth@btinternet.com. All ideas are welcome!

Fancy rowing round GB ? for £60k!

Fancy rowing round GB ? for £60k!

Do you have what it takes to row non-stop around Great Britain in an Ocean Rowing Boat?  and beat the current 26 day record set by a 4 man army team in 2005 in order to claim the £60,000 cash prize ?

We are entering an all male crew into the ANGLO AMERICAN BOAT RACE 2010 with the sole aim of winning the race and the £60,000 prize fund. We are taking expressions of interest from men who think they have what it takes to win the race. You must be available for the month of June.

THE RACE www.gbrowchallenge.com The Anglo American Boat Race is a 2,000 mile circumnavigation of the British coastline starting and finishing at Tower Bridge in London on the 1st of June. The race originated in 1872 when the Atalanta Rowing Club of New York posted a challenge in 1872 to the London Rowing Club to row a four-oared race on the Thames. The challenge was accepted by the London Rowing Club for June 1872 and the Anglo-American Boat Race was born. The Anglo-American Boat Race Series was still one of the most important Boat Races of the Season until out-break of World War II when the race was not continued and it simply disappeared. 2010 sees its return.

PRIZE MONEY
Crews can win up to £60,000 in prize money. £30,000 will be awarded to the first across the line, £10,000 will be awarded to the second across the line and a further £30,000 will be awarded to the crew who set a new record. We will be putting out a crew who are capable of winning the race and beating the record. All prize money will be split equally between the crew members, the skipper and the team manager.

THE SKIPPER The crew will be skippered by Bill Godfrey, 39. Bill won the pairs class of the Atlantic Rowing Race 2007. He has almost 20 years rowing experience and has represented London Rowing Club in the finals of the prestigious Thames Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. He now coaches rowing at home in South Africa.

THE CREW
5 men will join Bill with the sole aim of winning the race. We are looking for determined committed men with offshore and/or endurance racing experience. Specialist engineering, navigation, electrics or comms skills would be advantageous. Crew members who are not rowers will be expected to commit a significant amount of time to rowing training. Unfortunately women cannot be considered.

THE BOAT
The boat is a 6-man ocean rowing boat and will be set up with three sculling positions. It will be similar to the boat rowed by the record setting crew of 2005, full details for which can be found on the race website. It is the only 6-man boat in the race (all other boats entered so far are 2 or 4-man).

COSTS
Costs to crew members will be £6,000 each, excluding personal equipment and provisions (such as clothing and food), training or travel. We have a team in the UK and in South Africa already working on sponsorship deals and we anticipate being able to reduce all costs and fees by at least half (if not completely) through sponsorship. But as this is not guaranteed crew members need to be able to self fund.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

In order to confirm participation a 15% deposit of £900 must be paid to the team manager by each crew member. The outstanding balance (minus existing sponsorship) will then be due on Friday 30th April. Any sponsorship money secured after the 30th of April will be held by the team manager and used to reimburse the crew up to a maximum of the original fee paid at the end of the race.

SELECTION PROCESS

Once you have read through this information and confirmed your interest you will be sent an application form. This must be returned by email no later than Friday 19th February. If selected to try out for the crew applicants will then be interviewed by the skipper and team manager. Applicants may also be asked to take part in a physical training exercise and a detailed personality profiling test on the weekend of the 27th and 28th of February. The final crew will be confirmed no later than the 28th of February.

TO REQUEST AN APPLICATION FORM PLEASE CONTACT THE TEAM MANAGER

Rhiannon Halliday, HSCT Scholarship Coach

Several junior gig rowers took part in the Callington school sports partnership indoor rowing competition, run in December. Due to transport problems, entries for the competition were completed at the respective schools during school time and after school clubs and then emailed in to the partnership office. Schools taking part were Looe, Saltash.net and Bude. The after school club at Looe school has been well established for over a year, and the pupils came away with the lions share of the results. However, Saltash.Net pupils put up a good fight to win three of the categories.

The majority of the members of the Looe indoor rowing club, row for the gig club – which saw a huge boost in junior numbers in 2009. The top three places in the year 9 girls category, who race for 4 minutes were taken by pupils who completed an 8 week learn to row course at the club in the summer and then went on to compete in the under 14 county championships. Jess Lee took first place, followed by Jade Major and Josie Marks. First, second and fourth positions in the boys equivalent also went to under 14 rowers. Adam Haler and Gus Gordon (first and second places) were members of the Looe crew who rowed to third place at this years championship. Ed O’connel, a promising young rower took fourth place in the category. The top two places in the year 10 girls race were taken by Lucy Rawe and Damaris Butters. These two girls stroked last seasons under 14 crew to second place and are also members of the under 16 crew. The two girls also have a lot of success with Polperro flashboat club. All 7 Looe entrants in the year 10 boys race bar one are gig rowers, and make up the bulk of the junior section at the club. In finishing order, Luke Chapman, Zach Thomas, Alex Hicks and Fred Alsop made up the rest of the second placed under 14 crew of 2009, along with Lucy and Damaris. Luke achieved a high score of 95%, rowing 1363m in 5 minutes. Spencer Delf and Reece Bassett took sixth and seventh place. This strong representation of the club proves the depth of talent within Looes junior section.

The indoor rowing club at Saltash.net school has only been running a matter of weeks, but already the pupils are showing potential for future competitions. A handful of indoor club members already row for both Caradon gig club and Saltash rowing club (affiliated to the CRA, and row flashboats and skiffs). Young Kieron Stapleton, member of Saltash RC finished in 6th place in the year 7 boys race. Hayden Fraser began rowing for both Caradon and Saltash this year and won several CRA trophies in his first year. He added the year 8 boys title to his collection, with a percentage of 88%. Lewis Stewart also rows for both clubs in the same crews as Hayden, and finished in 5th place in the year 9 boys category. Josh Copeland who completed his first season with Caradon gig club in 2009 finished 6th in the year 11 boys race, rowing for 6 minutes. It is hoped that more pupils from the indoor club will make the transition onto the water this summer to row with Caradon and strengthen the junior section.

The next event is the county indoor championships, held at Newquay Tretherras on the 27th January. Good luck to all young gig rowers competing!

The 'Harry Paye' Charity Row

The ‘Harry Paye’ Charity Row

THE ‘HARRY PAYE’ CHARITY ROW 2010.  On the 15th of May 2010 the Pirates of Poole intend to row a 32 foot GRP copy of a Cornish Pilot Gig from Lands end to Poole quay dressed as pirates. We will travel approximately 250 miles stopping at several seaside towns and harbours (please see attached schedule) on this journey. The crew began training in December as none of this motley crew have experience of rowing this type of vessel and we intend to raise monies for several different charities.

Macmillan; as I recently lost my father to cancer.

The Wessex heartbeat; as one of the crews 2 year old daughter would not be here now without the help of these people.

The R.N.L.I.; three of our crew are lifeboat crew.

The Royal Marines charity trust Fund; one of the crew and one of the event organisers are ex marines.

Headway; one of the crew was helped by these people after a serious head injury.

Our boat is currently being built in St.Austell and we hope to take delivery of it early in the New Year. This vessel is only being built through the generous sponsorship of LAIRD SECURITY HARDWARE LTD. And the help and support of Swanage rowing club.

The boat will be named ‘ARRYPAYE’ after the infamous pirate of Poole (see attached history) and will also show sponsors logos or web site addresses. Our land support crew will be arriving at destinations ahead of us in order to set up a stall for charity collection and public awareness of the event. All company sponsors will also be advertised on our support van and any correspondence letters. We will also be advertising Harry Paye day which will take place on june19th on Poole quay and the boat will take part in the parade of pirates and be on display to the public, we will also be displaying the boat in the build up to the row on poole quay during April and May to maximise exposure for sponsors and help with our charity collections.

We also intend to take letters of apology from the Pirates of Poole to several towns on route as the Spanish and French fleet pillaged several of these on route to Poole in 1406 whilst hunting for Harry Paye and ending up in Poole and burning the town to the ground.

Should you feel that you or your company could help through sponsorship of any kind be it a cash donation towards our selected charities or help with equipment needed to undertake this challenge please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

We are currently at the early stages of organisation but the positive response we have had so far has been really encouraging and I feel this will grow to become a very high profile event. More information about the Pirates of Poole and what we do is available at www.piratesofpoole.com

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and any support you can offer will be gratefully received.
