  • 4th and 5th September 2010 – Ladies and Under 16’s Championships
  • 18th and 19th September 2010 – Men’s Championships

Newquay Rowing Club is pleased to invite you to the annual County Gig Championships to be held at Newquay Harbour.  The format will be the usual knock-out competition as follows:

Saturday :: Coxswain’s meeting at 9.00am

Round 1 (commencing at 9.30am)

Round 2

Sunday :: Quarter-Final’s at 9.30am

Round 1 of under16’s (ladies weekend only)

Semi-Finals

Under 16’s Final (ladies weekend only)

Final

It is important that all crews are registered by Friday 13th August. Please complete the entry form and post to Anne Curnow Care along with the deposit. Heats and berths for Round 1 will then be drawn and published on the CPGA website.  There will be a maximum of 6 gigs in each race and Rounds 1 and 2 will consist of heats (number will depend upon entries) with 2 races in each heat.  To enter, your crew should be able to complete a 2 mile course in under 20 minutes as a minimum level of competence.  The gigs are loaned to us in good faith, so coxwains should have a good level of competence (no novice coxwains please).

C crews will be restricted depending upon the number of A and B crew entries that we receive and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so get your applications in early!  After that any additional C crews will be added to the reserve list, but you need to be aware that some crews do not ‘drop out’ until the day.

Because of your feedback on changing weather conditions, this year we have altered the progression so that ROUND ONE WILL NOT BE TIMED.  Instead, places 1, 2 and 3 in each race will go through to round two.  Crews will be seeded from the results so far this year, so that top crews should not go out in round one because of this change.  This will also mean that we can move the start line to Fly cellars, should tide and weather dictate without affecting the results.  Timings will apply from round two onwards and the winners of each race from round one will be seeded into round two.  This does mean, however that THERE WILL BE NO PLATE RACE because it will not be possible to give overall placings from the first round.

The coxwains meeting will take place IN THE ROWING CLUB this year.  We appreciate that some of you are travelling a long distance and may be in one of the later races in the first round.  However, this meeting gives you important information about racing rules and safety therefore we will require at least one representative from each club to attend (coxwains only).  A register will be taken so that this can be checked.

A returnable deposit of £50 per crew will be levied.  This will be returned to clubs as you register your crews.  Please make cheques payable to CPGA and included with your entry form.

Gigs of a similar age/speed will be provided through the CPGA (our thanks to those clubs who are kindly entrusting us with their boats). You will be required to provide your own oars, seats, pins and VHF Radio and lifejackets (where appropriate). All gigs must carry a working and turned on VHF Radio.

The Junior Championships will be held on Sunday 5th September, after the ladies Quarter-Finals.  All crews and coxwains must wear lifejackets (provided by your own club).  If any crews rowing in the ladies or men’s championships contain a rower who is of junior age, the rower (or rowers) and coxwain must wear lifejackets.

Parking for rowers will be available in Tower Road Car Park (privately owned car park next to the mini golf/bunker café), where we have agreed a concessionary rate for rowers and supporters of £4 per day or £6 for the two days (normal rate is £5 per day).  Just make sure you pay the man in the hut and tell him that you are a rower, rather than use the pay and display machine.

Hot and cold food, pasties, burgers, sandwiches, cakes and hot and cold beverages will be available from the gig shed.  Official 2010 County Championships clothing (Sweaters, hoodies, vests, T-Shirts, etc) will be on sale by the gig shed.

Your Public Liability Insurance should be registered with the CPGA secretary prior to the event, as should all rowers participating in the event.

Presentations will take place shortly after the finals on the Sunday of each weekend.  There will be a disco in the rowing club on both Saturday and Sunday evenings.  Please contact me direct for details of campsites and accommodation at lucyemmett@btinternet.com.

In the event of cancellation due to adverse weather conditions, please check the CPGA website on the Friday beforehand.  Individual e-mails will be sent to club secretaries of registered crews.

We look forward to seeing you all in September.

GR300 :: Get your bike out

GR300 :: Get your bike out

Are you up for it?

After the huge success of the GR20 (20 Gig Clubs, 2 Days and 180 miles) the idea came up for the GR300 (300 kilometers ish, 4 days and all the 27 Gig Clubs in Cornwall).

See the report from last year here

The Date

First Weekend in November 2010
Four Days
Thursday Nov 4th -- Sunday Nov 7th.

The Cost

All the money goes towards costs incurred to run the event and any left over money goes to charity. To see the GR20 accounts from last year click here.

The total cost for the event is over £6,000, last year Jeremy and I bank rolled the event but this is not possible with the growth of the event and so the King Harry Ferry Company have kindly offered to bank roll it this year and without their support it would not be possible.

Full four days: £95 (Includes: 3 nights accommodation (Inc bed, sheets & pillow), Breakfast (Porridge, toast and cereal), Evening meal (Pasta feast with pudding and custard, pos pub meal sat night), Transport for your bag each day, Support vehicle & T-Shirt)

Just the weekend (For Colin & his lady friends): £75 (Includes: 2 nights accommodation (Fri & Sat & inc bed, sheets & pillow), Breakfast (Porridge, toast and cereal), Evening meal (Pasta feast with pudding and custard, pos pub meal sat night), Transport for your bag each day, Support vehicle, T-Shirt & Transport from Lancton to Penzance on Sat am for you and your bike)

PLEASE TRY AND DO THE WHOLE EVENT AND NOT JUST THE WEEKEND

Accommodation

Included in your entry fee is accommodation in the following Youth Hostels as well as breakfast and dinner.  This is not 5star luxury but at the end of the day most people don’t care to much where they sleep. Where possibles couples will be put in beds/rooms together. In Padstow we are going to have to top up beds with B&B accommodation.

Thursday :: Gollant YH

Friday :: Penzance YH

Saturday :: Padstow YH

The Route

In light of feedback from last year and the extra 2 days we have backed of on the hills and distances.  We have avoided the nasty hills and chosen the faster roads to help you keep your average speed up. Please note the final route has yet to be confirmed as we have some more research to do but approximate distances will be:

Day 1: Launcton to Gallant 55 miles (4.5 hrs at 12mph av)
Day 2: Gallant to Penzance 57 miles (4.5 hrs at 12mph av)
Day 3: Penzance to Padstow 70 (6 hrs at 12mph av)
Day 4: Padstow to Launcton 48 miles (4 hrs at 12mph av)

Total: 232 Miles in 4 Days (373 k)

Finally

This event is all about raising money for The Pearl of Africa Childrens Choir.

The Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir Ltd is a UK charity whose main purposes are to further education and the relief of poverty in Uganda, especially by supporting the Molly and Paul Childcare Foundation, an organisation established in 1983 to build homes and schools for orphaned and destitute children in Kampala and Masaka districts of Uganda. There are now 7 schools with over 2600 pupils.

Children from these schools sing and dance in The Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir. They visit the UK to raise awareness and the desperately required funds to help sustain and improve the standard of education, healthcare and living conditions in their schools and will be singing in Padstow on the Saturday night.
We will be looking for a minimum sponsorship pledge of £100 per rider, you will get a sponsorship form when you register.

If all goes to plan the choir will be joining all the riders in Wadebridge and riding into Padstow with us.  After supper and a shower around 300 people (including all the riders) will head to Padstow Church to see the choir perform before a few beers in town.

The event will be capped at 80 riders.
