Devoran Gig Club held their regatta on a calm Saturday September 19th and benefitted from some last drops of fantastic summer weather for their late afternoon event. With spring tides giving the opportunity to race for some hours off the quay, eleven clubs enjoyed great racing up the river near Truro.

The hosting club of Devoran won the overall prize for most consistent racing, with a finishing total of 21 points. Helford won both the Men’s A and B events whilst Flushing & Mylor dominated the Ladies results. Coverack won the Under 14’s race with Devoran the Under 16’s, whilst the racing kicked off with a win by Porthgain in the Veterans. This race featured 84 year old Angus Nicholson from Flushing & Mylor, whose mixed crew came in a respectable 5th out of 11 entrants.

A moving tribute to the famous gig builder and president of the CPGA, Ralph Bird, took place just before the Ladies B race. Every gig paraded down past Ralph’s house to sing and wave to him from the river. Ralph has unfortunately been very unwell lately and it was a gesture which many felt they wanted to make.

As dusk fell, the Mixed crew race unfortunately had to be abandoned due to lack of light but the prize giving went ahead by torchlight on the riverbank and the winning crews celebrated for many hours more.
