MPM 2009
This report just in from Arjan Vergeer. Dutch MPM race : double win for Gig Club Scheveningen.
In this weekend’s MPM-race in Holland, Gig Club Scheveningen won the mens as well as ladies race. 12 gigs took part in the race. Among them, two teams from the UK (Truro and Penryn). In the 8 km long race, which is rowed two time on Saturday and one time on Sunday, the Scheveningen ladies A-crew where a class apart. Their overall time was 02:10:50,09 against 02:25:10,0 for Truro, the number two in the ladies race. An unbelievable 15 minute time gap between the number one and two of the race!
[Ed - that bodes very well for ladies Scheveningen crew at World Championships 2010. And, Helen Nance writes : "The ladies crew from Truro who were second behind the Scheveningen crew also won the tropy for best ladies crew, with an average of age of 45. Gill and I from the Rame gig club rowed with the Penryn ladies in Morlader and we finished 17 seconds behind Truro. With a similar average age we got two Cornish teams in the top three."]
The mens race was a close race between Gig Club Scheveningen and Gig Club Muiden. Muiden had long been deemed to be the faster crew of the two but things didn’t quite work out that way. Scheveningen won two of the three races. Thier overall time was 02:00:10.62 against 02:01:20,21 for Muiden. In the short history of gig rowing in the Netherlands, it’s the first time Scheveningen took the double at the MPM race.

Hi Helen,
The average age of the Scheveningen A-crew is indeed lower than 45, I guess their average age is 30-32. A 40+ myself, I agree that age does matter
All respect for the Truro team and their second place. Well done!

Hi
I have just got back from my first MPM regatta, what Arjan Vergeer didn’t mention was that the ladies crew from Truro who were second behind the Scheveningen crew also won the tropy for best ladies crew with an average of age of 45. Gill and I from the Rame gig club rowed with the Penryn ladies in Morlader and we finished 17 seconds behind Truro. With a similar average age we got two Cornish teams in the top three.
Gill and I would like to thank Bev, Lindsey, Gwen, and Chris from Penryn and Tony for coxing for a great weekend.
Helen
