NO OAR RACKS :: Scilly 2010

NO OAR RACKS :: Scilly 2010

The Isles of Scilly Steamship company have requested that no oar racks under any circumstances are to be placed on gigs. Any gigs with racks left on will be left on the quay and will miss their shipping slot. As a general reminder, the trailer must be in full working order with a working handbrake, jockey wheel and working legs at the rear of the trailer.

What does British Rowing do for Gig Rowers ?

Outlined below is an overview of the development work carried out between British Rowing and the CPGA in 2009, and planned developments for 2010. This post is designed to provide clubs and members with further information about the work British Rowing is carrying out in conjunction with the CPGA, to support the development of Gig Rowing.

Coaching, Coxing, Technique & SPC

Coaching

The Fixed Seat Level 2 Coaching qualification has now been running for two years, delivered jointly by British Rowing staff and trained CPGA tutors and assessors. In 2009 two courses were run, one for the Cornish Rowing Association and one for CPGA clubs in the Carrick area. This takes the total of Level 2 qualified coaches from within the CPGA and CRA to 37, since the course was launched, with a further 12 in the process of completing the qualification.

In 2010 there are three further courses planned, in Fowey, West Cornwall and Dorset, which will provide further opportunities for clubs to obtain qualifications. Funding is currently being sought to try and subsidise the cost of the qualification for clubs and members.

Coxing

One of the main areas of work in 2009 has been the completion of the Level 1 Coastal Coxes Course, which is now available for members of CPGA clubs. A group of experienced coxes from within the CPGA have been trained to deliver the course, with the aim being to provide at least one course per CPGA area in 2010. Details of the course content, and dates of courses currently planned are available at the CPGA and British Rowing websites.

Technique

A further area of development in 2009 has been the completion of a gig rowing technique workshop. This workshop is included as part of the Level 2 coaching course. In addition a standalone workshop is to be run within each CPGA area over the winter of 2010, which any club member can attend. Details about the workshop, and dates currently planned are available at the CPGA and British Rowing websites.

Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC)

British Rowing’s SPC workshop is now available for delivery to CPGA clubs. The workshop provides training for club welfare officers and coaches of juniors. In 2009 one workshop was run in Falmouth, with a further three planned in 2010, in conjunction with the Level 2 coaching courses. Course details and dates are available at the CPGA and British Rowing websites.

Junior Development

HSCT Scholarship Coach Program

Support of junior development in 2009 has been significant, largely due to the appointment of British Rowing Scholarship Coach Rhiannon Halliday. Rhiannon has been working with Looe, Charlestown and Fowey to support those clubs to develop their junior sections and links with local secondary schools. Each club now has a formal link with their local school, with the clubs supporting the running of after school indoor rowing clubs. Pupils from those clubs are then invited to carry out a Learn to Row course on the water, which provides them with a structured introduction to gig rowing. Many of the juniors completing the course have gone on to join the clubs, all of whom were well represented at the CPGA U14 and U16
championships.

In addition Rhiannon has been supporting other junior development activities, including the 3rd annual junior training camp at Stithians in October, and the Cornwall Schools Indoor Rowing Championships, which were attended by over 200 pupils from schools across Cornwall. In addition Rhiannon organised a trip to the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships in London for a large group of juniors from Cornwall.

Finally, as part of her masters dissertation Rhiannon has been undertaking research into the junior competition within the CPGA, which will be used to help the association develop its racing structure for juniors.

Clubmark

Congratulations to Cattewater, Caradon, Charlestown, Looe and Fowey, all of whom achieved Sport England’s Clubmark accreditation in 2009. Clubmark is a nationally recognised scheme, which recognises clubs who achieve the high standards in terms of club structure and organisation, particularly relating to juniors.

A further two CPGA clubs are currently working towards Clubmark standard. Any other clubs interested in the programme should contact British Rowing for further details.

Sport Unlimited

British Rowing currently has funding applications pending in Cornwall and Devon, which if successful will see the launch of a project linking eight CPGA clubs with sixth form and further education colleges, to support an increase rowing amongst 16-18 year olds. If successful, each club will be provided with funding to run a Learn to Row course for a group of pupils from their local college, who will then be encouraged to go onto join the club. Each of the clubs involved will be accredited as part of British Rowing’s new Explore Rowing program.

Adult Development

CPGA Indoor Rowing Project

In 2009 the CPGA’s 12 rowing machines, funded through a grant from British Rowing, were utilised by six clubs, who used them for a variety of activities, including club training, links with schools and other rowing projects within the community. Details of how to apply for use of machines in the next phase of the project are available on the CPGA website.

Explore Rowing

British Rowing has recently launched the Explore Rowing programme, a new project which will be the associations’ flagship scheme over the next four years. The programme is designed to encourage increased participation in rowing through a variety of activities, including a nationally recognised Learn to Row course, and a series of new activities such as personal challenges and rowing tours. CPGA clubs who wish to become part of this scheme should visit the British Rowing website for more details

Facility Development

In 2009 British Rowing and the CPGA carried out a facilities audit to identify the current state of CPGA club facilities, and identify potential projects for investment over the next 2-3 years. British Rowing are currently working with a number of CPGA clubs to support them with facility development, and would be pleased to hear from any other clubs with possible projects requiring support.

GR20 Shelterboxes :: On the way to Haiti

GR20 Shelterboxes :: On the way to Haiti

Earlier this year GigRower ran the GR20, a charity bike ride taking in 20 Gig Clubs in two days, and raised over £2,000 for Shelterbox.

This weekend we received the following text from Tommy at Shelterbox:

”Hey mate, just to let you know it looks like the shelterboxes raised through the GR20 are gonna be on their way to haiti. Top stuff! Tommy”

Again we just wanted to say a big well done who all that took part and help raise money for this fantastic charity.

The 'Harry Paye' Charity Row

The ‘Harry Paye’ Charity Row

THE ‘HARRY PAYE’ CHARITY ROW 2010.  On the 15th of May 2010 the Pirates of Poole intend to row a 32 foot GRP copy of a Cornish Pilot Gig from Lands end to Poole quay dressed as pirates. We will travel approximately 250 miles stopping at several seaside towns and harbours (please see attached schedule) on this journey. The crew began training in December as none of this motley crew have experience of rowing this type of vessel and we intend to raise monies for several different charities.

Macmillan; as I recently lost my father to cancer.

The Wessex heartbeat; as one of the crews 2 year old daughter would not be here now without the help of these people.

The R.N.L.I.; three of our crew are lifeboat crew.

The Royal Marines charity trust Fund; one of the crew and one of the event organisers are ex marines.

Headway; one of the crew was helped by these people after a serious head injury.

Our boat is currently being built in St.Austell and we hope to take delivery of it early in the New Year. This vessel is only being built through the generous sponsorship of LAIRD SECURITY HARDWARE LTD. And the help and support of Swanage rowing club.

The boat will be named ‘ARRYPAYE’ after the infamous pirate of Poole (see attached history) and will also show sponsors logos or web site addresses. Our land support crew will be arriving at destinations ahead of us in order to set up a stall for charity collection and public awareness of the event. All company sponsors will also be advertised on our support van and any correspondence letters. We will also be advertising Harry Paye day which will take place on june19th on Poole quay and the boat will take part in the parade of pirates and be on display to the public, we will also be displaying the boat in the build up to the row on poole quay during April and May to maximise exposure for sponsors and help with our charity collections.

We also intend to take letters of apology from the Pirates of Poole to several towns on route as the Spanish and French fleet pillaged several of these on route to Poole in 1406 whilst hunting for Harry Paye and ending up in Poole and burning the town to the ground.

Should you feel that you or your company could help through sponsorship of any kind be it a cash donation towards our selected charities or help with equipment needed to undertake this challenge please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

We are currently at the early stages of organisation but the positive response we have had so far has been really encouraging and I feel this will grow to become a very high profile event. More information about the Pirates of Poole and what we do is available at www.piratesofpoole.com

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and any support you can offer will be gratefully received.

Poltair SSP :: Indoor Rowing Competition

Poltair SSP :: Indoor Rowing Competition

With most gigs out of the water over the winter, many clubs will be enduring hours of training on the rowing machine and in the gym. While most rowers believe the ergo to be a form of torture, indoor rowing in schools is growing in popularity in schools throughout Cornwall – with a club established in many schools throughout the county. To support this, a competition framework is in place to allow pupils to compete against one another over the winter months. Each pupil rows for a set time according to their year group. For example, year 7s row for 2 minutes, year 8s for 3 minutes, and so on. Once in year 12 and 13 – the race is a 2000m row with the best time winning. Each age group has a ‘gold medal target’ set, from which a percentage can be devised in order to compare performance against any rower in the country!

Many rowing clubs have created links with schools, and set up a school club, in order to enhance their junior rowing sections. These include Newquay, Cape Cornwall, Penrice (Charlestown gig club), Fowey, Looe, Saltash (Caradon) and Poltair (Castle Dore).

The first set of competitions are ‘school sports partnership (SSP)’, involving all schools linked to their own SSP. The Poltair SSP competition was held in early December, with entries from Fowey, Roseland, Poltair, Penrice, Bodmin, Tretherras, Treviglas and St.Austell college. The competition saw some excellent performances – especially from gig rowers currently competing on the junior gig circuit.

Fowey gig club were represented by sisters Maria and Fiona Norman. Maria rowed to 10th place in the year 7 girls category, while Fiona took the top spot in the year 10/11 girls category rowing 1268m in 5 minutes which gave a percentage of 99%. Michael Shakespeare, who rows in the under 14 and 16 crews also took top spot in the year 8 male race. Tom Douglas, Tom Vincent and Mark Denton who are all members of the under 16 junior crew rowed to 12th, 14th and 10th place respectively in the year 10/11 race. Junior rowers from Charlestown gig club also rowed well in the event. Under 14 rowers Sam Perry and Jack Durston battled it out in the year 8 boys race to finish 4th and 6th. Sisters Leah and Hannah Rowe finished 13th and 6th in their races. More siblings, Joe and Lauren Bailey also competed, finishing 4th and 14th in their races.

A good number of Tretherras and Treviglas pupils also row for Newquay rowing club. Bodmin community college pupil Emily Kneale, who won the year 8 girls race is a member of Looe rowing club, and was part of the third placed crew in the 2009 under 14 championships. Emily gained the best result of the day, with 100% of the gold medal target for her age. Promising young rower Jemima Hitchings of Roseland rowed to 4th place in the year 10/11 girls race achieving 93% of gold medal target.

It is fantastic to see so many young gig rowers producing good results in school competitions. Indoor rowing is a great way to form strong club school links, and become aware of potential new junior rowing members. A report from the Callington SSP event will follow soon!
