All NEW GigRower :: What do you think?

All NEW GigRower :: What do you think?

After a complete overhaul the new GigRower theme is now up and running and (so far touch wood) it seems to be working well.

Since GigRower was launched in 2008 over 250 posts have been added and to help rowers navigate the site and find what they are looking for we have given the site an overhaul, created some new pages and given it a fresh new design.

But without feedback we have no idea what users think. So, the GigRower team would all really appreciate it if you could add a ‘comment’ to this post, critical as well as complimentary.

What works well and what doesn’t?
What you use the site for?
Does it display okay in your browser?
Do you have any ideas for improvements?
Do you find it easy to navigate?

Cheers,

The GigRower Team

Ocean GigRowing Girls :: Take on Indian Ocean

Ocean GigRowing Girls :: Take on Indian Ocean

Gig Rowers Madeleine Steer and Christine Bunting are two young women from Salcombe Gig Club, South Devon who have entered into the first ever Indian Ocean Rowing Race in April 2011. This involves them rowing 3100 miles (Atlantic is 2900 miles, completed in 2005 by James Cracknell and Ben Fogle) across the Indian Ocean from Geraldton, near Perth in Australia to Mauritius in a 24ft ocean row boat. The race is organised by a company based in the South West of England called Woodvale Challenges. They have run Ocean Rowing Races every other year since 1997 across the Atlantic.

ocean-girls

Only 300 people have ever rowed an ocean and of those only about 50 were women. We are currently the only women’s pair team entered and will become the first ever Women’s Ocean Row Pair to cross the Indian Ocean.

ocean-girls-boat

The boat is a Woodvale Pairs Class Boat, originally designed by Phil Morrison and Spud Rowsell. We are going to build our own boat at Lincombe Boat Yard in Salcombe. This design is the most successful ocean row boat in history, originally created for the 1997 Atlantic Race, and has since made more crossings than any other design. It is 24ft long and just over 6ft wide with an aft cabin for sleeping and storage and a forward cabin for storage, with the rowing positions in the middle.

ocean-girls-rowing

Once built the boat has to be fitted out so that we can be self sufficient for up to 90 days at sea.

For up to three months we will be rowing a shift pattern of 2 hours on and 2 hours off, sleeping in the aft cabin whilst the other one rows. We will have solar panels to power our watermaker, navigation equipment and other electronics onboard. Safety equipment is vital, we will have 2 EPIRBs, a satellite phone, liferaft, survival suits, comprehensive medical kit, various sea anchors and smaller survival items onboard. We have to carry enough food to keep us in good shape whilst burning up to 5000 calories each per day. Entertainment will be provided by mp3 players, audio books will be our new best friend! There will be spares on board of vital equipment, including another set of our specially designed oars.

The boat will be named “Salcombe Spirit” at its launch.

NO Oar Racks :: On trailers off to Scilly

PLEASE DO NOT SEND GIGS THAT ARE GOING ON THE STEAMSHIP WITH OAR RACKS,  they are unable to carry. Hence one gig did not go the other day …

PLEASE this has only come through this morning, can you make sure that no others have oar racks, if you have sent a boat with oar racks it probably went on the Gry, or was the only one of three and when it was loaded it went on the starboard side of the steamship, you were bliming lucky!!! Please this could prevent your gig and others getting to the islands so don’t send them down with the racks.

Bristol Gig Race :: Results & Pics

Bristol Gig Race :: Results & Pics

Saturday the 21st of March saw Bristol Gig Club host the Bristol River Challenge, a row from Portishead to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, taking in some spectacular views of the Avon Gorge along the way. The fantastic weather that had been around all week continued through until the Saturday, and at Portishead Marina it felt more like August than late March.

Nine gigs took part in the race in total, with six crews competing for the men’s trophy, two for the mixed, and a solitary women’s crew from Torridge. Quite a crowd had gathered at the marina to see the gigs lock out, and everyone was in good spirits as the lock gates opened out to the estuary.

gigsbridge

Due to the narrow entrance to the Avon, the field was split in two to give the gigs a but more space on the river, and the majority of the men’s fleet went off first, with the strong tide and light breeze helping them towards the river mouth. The second division started shortly after with mixed crews from Bristol and Rock, two men’s crews from Salcombe and Illfracombe, and the ladies crew from Torridge.

The Bristol men’s crew in Young Bristol led from the start, intent on gaining the advantage of getting to the river mouth first as they strived to defend their title from the last Bristol River Challenge. With plenty of support from spectator boats as well as from onlookers alongside the river, Young Bristol stroked into a commanding lead as the crew kept up a relentless pace. In the second division the Bristol mixed crew battled with Illfracombe and Salcombe right from the start as the three gigs jostled for position on the approach to river mouth. In the end it was Bristol mixed crew rowing in the Isambard that gained the advantage though it remained pretty close between the three crews.

youngbristolsuspension

A beautiful sunny day, the Avon Gorge provided a stunning backdrop for the competing gigs rowing up the river, and the Bristol men’s crew came under the Clifton Suspension Bridge in a winning time of 1hr 47seconds. Bristol’s mixed crew managed to hold off the competition in the second division, winning the mixed category, and the Torridge ladies managed a respectable time picking up the women’s trophy.

1 – Young Bristol Men 1hr 00m 47seconds
2 – Bedhaven Men 1hr 03m 14seconds
3 – Ella Rose Men 1hr 4m 3 seconds
4 – Wolf  Men 1hr 4m 10seconds
5 – Isambard Mixed – 1hr 4m 34 seconds
6 – Rapparee Men – 1hr 5m 23 seconds
7 – Bolt Men – 1hr 5min 44seconds
8 – Speedwell Mixed – 1hr 9m 15 seconds
9 – Will To Win Women – Will To Win 1hr 17m 50 seconds

Looe Round The Island Race :: Results & Pics

Looe Round The Island Race :: Results & Pics

Saturday 21st March saw the official opening of Looe Rowing Club’s brand new purpose built ‘Esmee Couch Boathouse’.  The £140,000 boathouse has been designed to store upto four gigs, along with the clubs three flashboats, ergos and other associated kit.  The boathouse is loacted on East Looe Seafront affording the club easy access to the beach or slipway for launching – something the old location didn’t requring boats to be towed through the town when the tide was out which lost time on the water and was hazardous in the summer month due to busy streets.

looe-pilot-gig-club-2

Mayor Ron Overd officially cut the ribbon at the ceremony which was attended by around 150 people from the town including members of the club past and present, councillors, funders and even Alan Meegan of the ARA whom made the 580mile round trip from Cheshire to be there.

looe-pilot-gig-club-31

All the money was raised from within Cornwall with the project being one involving the whole community.  The boathouse carries the name Esmee Couch thanks to a trust fund left by one Mary Esmee Stubbs Couch, former leader of the Looe Urban District Council, to the town and administered by the Lions Club of Looe.  Other funds came from Viridor Credts, Our Money Your Dream (Cornwall Youth Oppurtunities fund), West Looe Town Trust,Caradon District Council and the land being leased from East Looe Town Trust.

looe-pilot-gig-club-1

To celebrate the opening, the inaugral Round the Island Race was held with eight clubs, Rock, Calstock, Tamar & Tavy, Cattewater, Rame, Penryn and Looe taking part in the 4.5 miles race around Looe Island.  Rock won the ladies race with Looe winning the men.  Rock took the trophy overall.  It is hoped that will become a regular pre-scillies date on the calander.  Apres race celebrations continued well into the night at the Sailing Club with local band Opium rocking the venue out. Cheap booze + good band + good atmosphere = top night!!  And a sore head the next day!

Anyone has any qeustions then send them my way…more than happy to help anyone in the future…would be delighted too share the considerable knowledge have built up over the last 18months. Mike

Thank you to Mike from Looe for this report. Race results and pics to follow soon …
