Saturday 21st March saw the official opening of Looe Rowing Club’s brand new purpose built ‘Esmee Couch Boathouse’.  The £140,000 boathouse has been designed to store upto four gigs, along with the clubs three flashboats, ergos and other associated kit.  The boathouse is loacted on East Looe Seafront affording the club easy access to the beach or slipway for launching – something the old location didn’t requring boats to be towed through the town when the tide was out which lost time on the water and was hazardous in the summer month due to busy streets.

Mayor Ron Overd officially cut the ribbon at the ceremony which was attended by around 150 people from the town including members of the club past and present, councillors, funders and even Alan Meegan of the ARA whom made the 580mile round trip from Cheshire to be there.

All the money was raised from within Cornwall with the project being one involving the whole community.  The boathouse carries the name Esmee Couch thanks to a trust fund left by one Mary Esmee Stubbs Couch, former leader of the Looe Urban District Council, to the town and administered by the Lions Club of Looe.  Other funds came from Viridor Credts, Our Money Your Dream (Cornwall Youth Oppurtunities fund), West Looe Town Trust,Caradon District Council and the land being leased from East Looe Town Trust.

To celebrate the opening, the inaugral Round the Island Race was held with eight clubs, Rock, Calstock, Tamar & Tavy, Cattewater, Rame, Penryn and Looe taking part in the 4.5 miles race around Looe Island.  Rock won the ladies race with Looe winning the men.  Rock took the trophy overall.  It is hoped that will become a regular pre-scillies date on the calander.  Apres race celebrations continued well into the night at the Sailing Club with local band Opium rocking the venue out. Cheap booze + good band + good atmosphere = top night!!  And a sore head the next day!
